Pisa and the Surrounding Area

Sights not to be missed

The city of Pisa is close to many other important and famous cities in Tuscany and in Liguria, such as Florence, Lucca, Livorno, Genova and other minor centres of great beauty such as Volterra and Cinque Terre. All these cities can be easily reached by public transportation or by car.

The immediate surrounding region is, however, very rich in lesser known natural and artistict treasures, which well deserve to be discovered and appreciated during your holiday in Pisa.

The province Pisa is usually divided in "subregions" which boast very diverse features and a rich history:

  • the Pisan area
  • monte pisano (Pisan mount)
  • Lower Val d'Arno
  • Valdera
  • hills of Pisa
  • Volterra and the Val di Cecina
  • Upper Val di Cecina

These regions have been populated for over 2000 years as the many monuments and historical buildings and ruins show.

Churches and monasteries, beautiful, small hilltop villages, magnificent noble mansions will win you over.

Nature is very generous as well: the Pisan area is rich in thermal waters and spas, breathtaking sceneries, natural parks and beautiful sandy beaches.

Pisa is in fact, only few kilomentres away from the beach and from very popular resorts such as Versilia and Viareggio, Forte dei Marmi, Marina di Pietrasanta. The closest beach towns, Marina di Pisa and Tirrenia, can be reached in 10 to 20 minutes, by car, bus or train.
