From the 10th to the 20th of May, the city celebrates Sant'Ubaldo with many different events and a beautiful flower market at Viale Le Piagge, the green heart of the city.
The liveliest month in Pisa is definitely June, when the city is at its best and many different events are organized.
In particular, the traveller to Pisa should not miss:
- June 16th: La Luminara di San Ranieri. On the 16th of June the city centre is decorated with thousands of candles which light up the Lungarni. The peak of the celebrations is represented by a fireworks display at 11 p.m.. The city is very crowded and the streets host a massive party which goes on until the following morning with music and dancing in the streets.
- June 17th: San Ranieri's Day. San Ranieri is the Patron Saint of Pisa. The 17th is dedicated to him and it is celebrated with a Regatta of the Historical Quarters of Pisa and a street market through the entire city centre.
- The last Sunday of June: Gioco del Ponte. The Gioco del Ponte for the people of Pisa is the equivalent of the Palio for the people of Siena. It takes place on the Ponte di Mezzo, where the teams of the different quarters of the city play a "game" consisting of pushing a cart towards the rivals' side of the bridge using only the strength of their necks. Needless to say there are some pretty big men playing this game!
