Discovering Pisa

Pisa is not only the Leaning Tower: it is a very lively and beautiful city with an ancient history which has much to offer to the curious tourist.

Just like Florence, it is built along the river Arno, which reaches the sea only few kilometres from the city.

Pisa dates back to the Etruscan era and is an important testimonial to the glorious history of Tuscany. It was, in fact, one of the four Maritime Republics, together with Genoa, Amalfi and Venice.

It is a city of art, but also a city of humanistic culture and science. It was the hometown of Galileo Galilei and nowadays the University of Pisa, Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna di Pisa and the CNR (National Research Centre) are four of the most important and prestigious cultural institutions in Italy and in the entire world.

Pisa has a very lively theatre and many cinemas. Many shows are staged every year, and numerous concerts as well as the many important exhibitions and conferences bring a large number of visitors to the city throughout the year.

The museums and the architectural beauty of the city attract the attention of people from all over the world.
